Wondering what medical information anyone suggests taking with you when traveling away from home in case of an injury or hospitalization. I have a whole notebook of reports/x-rays/MRI's for my daughter but prefer to take what would be needed most if she needed medical attention. Any suggestions?

I just got back from my summer vacation.  To prepare for it I started with a list of everything I needed to do.  This included locating the closest hospital to our vacation spot and having a plan in the event of an emergency, and filling all my prescriptions (be sure to get a back up hard copy of any pain meds as those can't be called in if you lose a bottle).  I created a folder with a list of my medications and their dosage, a brief word document of my medical history and then contact numbers for my doctors (I also let my doctors know I was going away too to make sure they were ok with it and to see if they had any suggestions I might have forgotten).  An obvious thing that can be forgotten are insurance cards - don't forget those.  Ever since my transplant I've worn a medical alert bracelet which has my name, diagnosis, primary hospital, and phone number for my doctor's office.  Here's a great website that has some really nice & cool bracelets and necklaces.  I found a great one.  www.laurenshope.com.  I would suggest printing out a medical document on Gorham's Disease or Lymphangiomatosis too.  Here are 2 excellent articles:

Gorham's Disease - http://www.clinmedres.org/cgi/content/full/3/2/65

Lymphangiomatosis - http://ajrccm.atsjournals.org/cgi/content/full/161/3/1037

Last but not least - HAVE FUN!!!

Sorry if this information finds you a little late. Whenever we go on vacation, the most important thing we bring with us is cell phone numbers of his main doctors. We have found that when issues arise - we need to keep his oncologist and infectious disease doctor informed so they can help make any decisions necessary. We are lucky that we have two main doctors that keeps informed of everything else going on with our son - so they have a good overall spectrum of issues. Also - we always get antibiotics when we are on a cruise, or camping when we don't have immediate access to a doctor & meds. Hope that helps!
